History and culture in motion: sightseeing around Meran

History comes to life on every corner in the noble town of Meran. Majestic buildings, squares and arcades, parks and promenades have borne witness to both the golden and the sombre periods in its history. Notable figures have helped to shape this region, while others have been deeply moved by its allure – most notably Empress Sissi.

But it is not only grand buildings, monuments and green gardens that make up the cultural experience of the holiday region of Meran. Here, you can experience South Tyrol as a crossroads of two cultures – the place where Italian and South Tyrolean mentalities, cuisine, lifestyle and fashion merge.

A holiday fit for a king: castles & fortresses. The Meran region, adorned as it is with an array of castles and fortresses, might lead you to believe that its name “Burggrafenamt” (meaning “Burgrave district”) stems from these historic edifices, especially since it refers to a section of the Etschtal/Adige valley close to Meran. However, a deeper investigation into the region’s storied past, filled with castles, fortresses and ruins, reveals the true origins of its name.

As you explore the history of the area, encounters with these ancient sites are inevitable. Famous witnesses to history, such as Trauttmansdorff Castle or Tirolo/Tirol Castle, are a must-see during your holiday in the Meran area.

Between gardens, parcs and promenades

When on holiday in or around Meran, taking the time to simply wander around on foot is a must. In fact, going for a stroll has long been a cherished activity here, especially along the historic Kurpromenade or Tappeinerweg. Meran’s townscape is characterised by expansive parks and lovingly tended promenades, and the promenades are still as lush, Mediterranean and occasionally exotic as they were in days gone by.

The Tappeinerweg, located just above Meran, is one of the longest promenades in Europe, offering four kilometres of species-rich vegetation and magnificent views of the Meran basin. Meanwhile, the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle are among the most beautiful botanical gardens in the world.

Cultural events

Markets, theatre productions, concerts, festivals – every season has its own special event! The Merano Music Weeks and the Wine Festival have made a name for themselves across the region and delight audiences every year anew.
