The cycle trail along the valley of the River Etsch links Meran to Bozen and forms part of the long-distance “via Claudia Augusta” cycling route – a cycle trail that lets you explore attractions further afield than Meran and its environs!
Particularly in spring and autumn, the bicycle is one of the best means of transport for touring from village to village, or from a glass of wine to a museum, from a castle to a promenade. Not only the cycle ways offer gentle routes – the many quiet side roads offer numerous inviting possibilities. South Tyrol has in recent years continuously invested in the development of its cycling infrastructure, and all the main valleys and numerous side valleys can now be safely reached on well signposted cycle ways.
There are countless opportunities for tours. With some 900 kilometres of cycle trails in South Tyrol alone, connections to international long-distance routes and a wide network of quiet side roads, the many cycling enthusiasts who holiday here also ensure that cycling is becoming the No. 1 local sport in South Tyrol!
If the perfect cycling day is interrupted by rain, tiredness or simply other plans, a railway station can usually be found just a few kilometres away. Stowing the bike on the train and shortening the riding distance is also allowed (reservation necessary on certain days and routes).
The Hotel Mesnerwirt, and the town of Meran as a whole, offer numerous opportunities to rent bikes should a spontaneous need to cycle arise. It is also possible (depending on the hirer) to return the bike to a different rental station, meaning you do not necessarily have to do a round trip. Set off by bike for Bozen in the morning and then just enjoy the day! Why indeed not?
